Most vehicles are not built for drifting; however, that does not necessarily mean that vehicles cannot be transformed into drifting vehicles with the help of a few modifications. When creating a vehicle for drifting, certain parts of the vehicle must be modified, such as the tires, differential, suspension and transmission. These four components of the vehicle are particularly important to drifting, because they provide the vehicle with the proper settings to handle the drift.

Instructions

1) Replace the differential of the vehicle, which provides the rotational force to the wheels, to a limited slip differential, if necessary. A limited slip differential provides torque for to both wheels when one starts to lose traction. Drive the vehicle up on a lift and lift the vehicle up enough to remove all of the bolts holding the differential in place. A variety of other parts may have to be removed from the vehicle before taking out the differential depending on the type of vehicle being modified. Install the limited slip differential. Drive the new differential 3,000 miles to break it in before using it to drift.

2) Put rear racing tire slicks on the vehicle. Lift the vehicle up off the ground using the car lift. Remove all the lug nuts from the wheel with the impact wrench. Hold the impact wrench over each lug nut and pull the trigger while holding the impact wrench firmly with two hands. Keep the lug nuts on the side. Take the two rear wheels off of the vehicle and replace them with wheels that are fitted with tread-less tire slicks. Tire slicks minimize the amount of grip the vehicle has on the track, thus allowing the vehicle to lose control to perform a drift. Screw on each lug nut by hand and tighten with the impact wrench.

3) Replace the transmission of the vehicle so that a manual transmission is used. A manual transmission gives the driver more control over the vehicle and allows the clutch to be dropped, causing the wheels to spin. Remove the automatic transmission components from the vehicle. Install the manual transmission into the vehicle by adding the clutch plate, clutch arm and push rods to name a few parts. An extensive amount of parts is needed to convert a vehicle's transmission. Purchase the necessary parts online or at an automotive parts outlet for the vehicle being modified. Drive the car for 3,000 miles to break in the new clutch before drifting.

Tips and Warnings

  • Drive the vehicle at least 3,000 miles after any new part is added to the vehicle to break in the part.
  • Modify a vehicle that is rear wheel drive for drifting.
  • Modify a vehicle that already has a manual transmission to decrease the modification costs.
  • Wear protective clothing, such as gloves and eyeglasses, while modifying a vehicle for drifting.
  • Purchase parts only suitable for the specific vehicle being worked on.
